Artist Of The Month; What Does It Mean?

As you may be aware, for the last few years the Bell Media group of radio stations have run an ’emerging artist of the month’ program nationally across the chain. Participation does not appear to be mandatory for each station, however a large percentage of their stations are on board, when the selected song fits their particular format (CHR, HAC or A/C).

How (we believe) it all works is fairly simple. At the beginning of every month each of the chains’ MD’s and PD’s are welcome to submit a candidate to become the ‘Artist Of The Month’ and then everyone votes. Each station’s vote carries equal weight in the process and the most votes wins. The chain is very particular to not allow outside influence from the music industry and in fact doesn’t even announce the winner to anyone other than the actual winner. To the rest of the industry and radio at large, it will simply appear as a regular station add. It’s only a trained eye that will see a surge of unexpected adds, look at the calendar and figure out what just happened. From there each station commits to playing the winning song for 4 weeks (the month) in what equates to about a medium rotation. After 4 weeks, each station can individually decide to drop it or move it into regular rotation.

Yearly, the chain assembles a promo-only compilation CD that features each song from the previous 12 months which they give out to listeners, industry etc.

We’ll get into quite a bit of detail about the program’s selected artists and titles below, so here’s a bit of a highlight package in case you’re in a hurry.

In our sample of the last 25 winners (Jan 2010 – Jan 2012) the program has:

-combined for 70,000x across all artists on Bell Media stations
-The Top 3 spinning stations are:
Kool Victoria (12,000x), Beat Vancouver (11,000x) and C100 Halifax (7,600x)

-supported 8 songs which made it to the HAC Top 20
-supported 7 songs which made it to the CHR Top 20
-supported 6 songs which made it to the A/C Top 20

The top 3 spinning artists / singles were:
Alyssa Reid “Alone Again” – 10,380x
Kristina Maria “Let’s Play” – 8,248x
JRDN “U Can Have It All” – 8,193x

8 artists were Toronto based (32%)
5 artists were Vancouver based (20%)

The average (mean) number of spins received was 2,791x while the median was lower, at 1,670x.

And now for the hardcore info:

Looking at the data for the previous 25 “Artist of the Month” recipients (Jan 2010 – Jan 2012), it looks like the program does a reasonable job at generating spins and helping songs become hits, with a good number of tracks getting into at least the Top-20 at their respective formats (32% at HAC, 50% at AC, 28% at CHR).

For a developing or independent act, the program can be a great way to gain some profile and exposure. If the act is able to develop airplay outside of the Bell Media stations, that month of guaranteed AOTM spins can be a nice boost that helps to create more momentum for the song, especially if the song has multi-format appeal. This broad format appeal is key, and seems to be an underlying element of the selection process. To this point there have been no ‘urban’ or ‘rap’ winners, with the slight exception of the R&B leaning JRDN. Generally speaking, songs that are selected can fit comfortably on multiple formats, or at the very least not stick out like a sore thumb.

Hot A/C Impact
To the above point, at the HAC format, or the ‘format in the middle’ of CHR and A/C, all 25 songs achieved chart placement, ranging from #4 to #44, with an average of #29. Since HAC is the primary focus of the AOTM program (with 7 of the 11 Bell Media stations HAC), this is where they have the greatest success rate, with 84% of the songs cracking the Top-40. Breaking out the chart placements:

– One (1) Top-10 HAC
– Eight (8) Top-20 HAC
– Twelve (12) Top-30 HAC
– Twenty-one (21) Top-40 HAC

A/C Impact
With Bell Media programming only two AC stations (QMFM Vancouver & Majic 100 Ottawa), the AOTM program is hit-or-miss at the format. Almost 50% of the selected songs didn’t cross over, with only 12 of the 25 seeing play at AC. AC chart positions ranged anywhere from #3 to #85, with the average chart number working out to again be #29. Despite being quite selective on which AOTM material they support, the spins provided by the stations have helped out, with 75% of the 12 songs that did recieve airplay on the A/C outlets placing in the AC Top-40:

– Four (4) Top-10 AC
– Six (6) Top-20 AC
– Eight (8) Top-30 AC
– Nine (9) Top-40 AC

CHR Impact
CHR, much like HAC, saw chart activity from all 25 songs, but the chart performance, on average, was marginal. With the majority of AOTM songs leaning more HAC-friendly, the CHR chart success is variable, with activity ranging from #8 to #167 and the chart average being #60. Only 40% of the songs broke into the Top-40. While Beat Vancouver and Bounce Halifax have extended airplay to virtually every AOTM song, the amount of airplay can, at times, be described as minimal, especially at Bounce, where 52% of the tracks got less than 100 spins, and 80% less than 200 spins.

Career Building
As for how useful the AOTM exposure has been in regards to helping develop careers, we really don’t have enough historic data to build an accurate picture of long-term success. But we can look at short-term success from the acts that won during the 2010 calendar year, at least as far as how their follow-up material performed.

— JRDN, Neverest, Stef Lang & Andrew Allen were able to release at least one (if not two) follow up singles that performed as well (or at least in the neighbourhood) for both the overall spin totals & chart rankings. All of the acts saw a continued level of support from Bell Media for the subsequent singles.

— Dirty Radio was able to generate at least some mid-chart interest with their subsequent releases, while Aleesia’s second follow-up performed much better than her first. Both of these acts saw a decrease in Bell Media airplay support on the follow-up.

— Despite scoring some serious, airplay, Laurell, Ricky J, Alisha Pillay and Jesse LaBelle were unable to generate any real interest in their follow-up, receiving less than 1,000 spins. All of these acts saw a significant decrease in Bell Media airplay support after the program ended for them.

— Aaliah Michaela and Miss Gold have done nothing since their brief time in the spotlight, with no follow-up releases.

So, based on the 2010 data, the batting average appears to be about a 50% success rate for acts being able to build upon their AOTM win and be more than the fabled “one-hit-wonder”.

Looking at the tracks individually, the data is radio-specific, with video play and any spins that occured at Alt Rock factored out, keeping the focus specifically on HAC, AC & CHR play. Percentages may not always total to exact sum due to rounding:
